Ducks are common throughout the United States. One of the most common is the mallard duck. Male mallards have a green head and are very easy to identify. There is another green-headed duck, though, that is not a mallard at all. It is the male northern shoveler duck.
Wood ducks are our most colorful native duck species – and they are very beautiful indeed. Male wood ducks, in particular, are truly unforgettable. They have hints of iridescent green and brown on their head, along with bold black and white markings.
Mallard ducks are a very common, medium-sized waterfowl species living throughout North America. In fact, they are the most abundant duck species on the continent. They are actually common in other parts of the world, too, such as Europe, Asia, Australia and North Africa.
Mergansers include a few different species of diving ducks that either live in the Midwest or pass through while migrating north. There are three species that are commonly seen spring and fall migrations, including common mergansers, hooded mergansers and red-breasted mergansers.
